Make no mistake about it, this political season is shaping into something that Louis Farrakhan once quipped regarding the selection of a U.S. President. The Nation of Islam leader quipped, “It is like picking between Satan, Lucifer, and the Devil! You’re going to hell with all three.”
There is little doubt that the foremost figure in ‘the run for the White House’ is none other than Donald Trump. To the dismay of his critics and opponents, the Trump Campaign has proven unstoppable for many reasons, the foremost of which is his ability to tap into the financial misery and woes of poor and middle-class whites who can be appropriately referred to as anxiety-filled regarding their tenuous economic position.
One of the most reliable barometers of a rise in racial animosity and conflict is either continuing trouble or a sudden downturn in the economic fortunes and opportunities of whites. For many whites, particularly those who the idealism that so often accompanies youth has worn off of, economic uncertainty, let alone crisis, is a trigger for them to enter survival mode; meaning they are willing to go to any lengths, including the implementation of discriminatory hiring practices and collusion against non-whites to increase their chances of surviving economic strife.
Make no mistake about it, the alluded to population of hard-working poor and working-class whites have personally witnessed their birthright of ‘white privilege’ squandered via the browning of this nation and the rise of ‘minority’ populations within America’s borders. The last white leader before Trump that was courageous enough to give voice to this on-going process was none other than former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke.
Let’s face fact, very few white leaders have the courage to address this matter in the way that Donald Trump has. And whites love him for it. Anyone who has paid attention to white angst recently, is aware of the familiar refrain that other races have the right to mobilize and protest for their rights while whites are expected, if not forced, to remain muted in regards to politics. Make no mistake about it, there is a significant segment of ‘white America’ that is angry, frustrated, and no longer willing to remain silent regarding the direction that this nation has gone.
It is through this historical lens that the recent conflict at a Trump rally scheduled at the University of Illinois at Chicago Pavilion must be viewed.
From the perspective of Trump supporters, those protesters who assembled for no other reason than to disrupt the rally were infringing upon their right to assemble. A move that to Trump supporters is yet another attempt by ‘minority’ populations to further erode what many ‘American Patriots’ believe is the primary purpose and utility of this nation, to serve the interests of whites.
According to University of Illinois at Chicago student Kamran Siddiqui, “Trump represents everything America is not and everything Chicago is not. We came in here and we wanted to shut this down. Because this is a great city and we don’t want to let that person in here.”
Unfortunately, protesters such as Siddiqui fail to realize that their actions further entrench Trump supporters in their adoration of the political upstart candidate. Indicative of such were chants of “We want Trump! We want Trump!” ringing throughout the Pavilion.
Most indicative of the impact that protesters are having upon this political season is found in the reaction of Trump supporter Bill Tail to the presence of anti-Trump protesters at the rally. “It’s a shame. They scream about tolerance, but are being intolerant themselves. That doesn’t make sense.”
The appearance of thousands of anti-Trump protesters in Chicago was indeed impressive. However, there will most certainly be a response to their actions by ardent Trump supporters in the moments to come. One thing is certain, this political season that has devolved into a colossal battle for ‘the soul of America’ will not be decided in this nation’s streets. It will ultimately be decided in voting booths.
And after poking and prodding this beast that is known as the GOP, progressives had better make sure that they and everyone that they know not only have their votes locked and loaded, but also are determined to pull the trigger. Failure to do so will usher this nation in one of its most unfortunate directions and it may never recover from it.
