I think the part that interested me the most was when they made the connection that even though slaves were joining both the sides of the colonists and the British, it was both mostly for the same reason. They were just trying to earn their freedom, whether it be due to the British or through the creation of the United States of America, they just wanted freedom. It was also a bit sad to learn that many fought so hard to even HOPE for that idea, only for them to be betrayed, especially when the US had won the revolution and were free. It’s just ironic that the colonists felt that being taxed made them think to be compared to slaves of the British, yet they had actual enslaved people who basically had no rights at all, some being mistreated, not fed or clothes and so on.
This video shows how sick America was, even tho today a lot of the same stuff is still happening just in different ways. These slaves were trying so hard to be seen and heard, but continued to get treated like they didn’t matter at all. They deserved to be heard. These slaves were putting in hard work , they even participated in wars but that still meant nothing to the white people. Thomas Jefferson could’ve played a huge role in the slaves getting free’d way sooner with all his beliefs but when it came down to actually speaking up for the slaves he would have never done so. These slaves were fed up as they should have been!
This video shows the white people’s fear of African Americans’ strengths and how threatened they are by them. Although they tried to keep black people from being able to read and write in hopes of keeping them in their same positions as slaves, black people still managed to learn a lot and stand up for themselves and their freedom and were ready to die behind it. It also shows the measures black people were willing to go to obtain their freedom.
I agree that whites definitely knew that if African Americans were given the tools to revolt, they would have, which is why they didn’t give many the chance to do so, but still many were lucky enough to have the chance to learn to read and write, and I think that those who did used it wisely to spread messages of freedom.
Towards the end of the video, it mentions how fugitives were not allowed to escape from one state to another. Enslaved women, men and children were labeled as fugitives and for seeking freedom and alleviation from the pain, suffering and continuous labor. Many laws and statements were created to benefit old, white slave-owners and their ancestors. I also find it ironic how the Declaration of Independence states “liberty and justice for all” during a time where there were many enslaved women and men by the same white men who created these laws.
Thomas Jefferson was a foul and disgusting man that worked in his own self interest. The Declaration of Independence its the most beautiful lie I have ever read or had read to me. David Walker was such a strong force. Mariah Stewart was ahead of her time. I truly believe that. Her words now still ring true. I also keep thinking about the way her mind transformed from admiration of the Black man to pity.

One of the petitions that have been made by slaves sounded like the document we know to be the Declaration of Independence but was dismissed. The book David Walker wrote was one of the first articles ever made that expresses the black community oppression.
America is built on contradictions and was led by hypocrites. The only difference between then in now is that we aren’t shackled, forced to work for free and the other horrible things that come with slavery. Other than that we are still fighting the same fight and that is for our needs and wants to acknowledged by a country our ancestors built for free.
seeing how the whites usually kill black people I didn’t expect them to kill their own kind. But the overall video was pretty sad to see how hard the slaves tried to be seen and heard but it just wasn’t good enough. But that still didn’t stop them from trying again in the late 1800s.
Slaves had tried to be heard in many ways but always seemed two steps behind in a way. It seems as though no matter how hard they worked to be free or participated in wars it wasn’t enough for slavery to just be abolished and throughout the late 1800s blacks started using their voice to push through the minds of slave owners and whites. The clip also shows how Thomas Jefferson was a hypocrite and had the power to maybe abolish slavery.
I agree with the fact that slaves were definitely strong willed, even though they had many set backs. They were also betrayed even after all the work they put in.
i wonder how mariah stewart went from looking up to black men to seeing them as pitiful and incompetent. It seems like everytime a person of color tried to make an attempt at taking a stand , others payed them little mind where as whites were evidentially afraid of the power that black people held.
For as long as I can remember black people have tried to rise above from slavery. No one wants to be held against their will. They did not like the idea of black people taking charge and rising up against white people. They wanted to break any sense of power we had. It is not until white peoples started dying that they started to care. When in actuality African Americans have been dying for a long time. It is just looked over. Any person who is held against their will, will try to escape.
I wonder how mariah stewart went from looking up to the black men that were standing up for a cause to seeing them as lazy and, in a way, incompetent. It seems like everytime someone of color attempted to take a stand, there words weren’t taking seriously by other people of color but held more power with the whites who were afraid of what would happen if people did come to the conclusion that they were in fact true.
I don’t think she necessarily thought they were lazy, but more like she wanted to call them to action and told them to realize they needed to take a stand. I do think that the men were rather more offended by a woman basically giving them orders and just completely ignored the true message.
When white men started to end up dead, the white community started to panic. Almost every adult black male over the age of 14 was picked up and imprisoned. When the part came up about Quack along with 12 other black men were burned along and 17 were hunted including 4 white men were hunted as well took me by surprised.
