How The Other Half Lives

  1. The opposition in these pictures are horrid to see. I hate the way this country operates and is so greedy. I know there is so much more they can do to help those in need. In today’s time, the pandemic is showing us what resources could have been in use to help those.

  2. This video shows how the living conditions haven’t really changed that much. Its sad to watch but this was a reality for so many black people and it still is. White people are the wealthiest people in this country. In the world in general, the rich get richer and the poor stay the same.

  3. These pictures are very eye opening. It’s just a reminder that back then you would have to be a wasp to be really considered white. They lived in terrible conditions which was sad because they have been led to believe that this is the land of opportunity.

  4. These horrible and horrid living conditions were unbelievably a reality for many. I can’t fathom the day to day life of a person who was actually living like this. It had to miserable.

  5. Watching this video just proved that no ur bing ever changed in this country. The white upper class always looked down upon the poor as they still do to this day . The poor is treated with no respect and as no human being should ever be treated. It goes beyond race. They just want to be Superior Over everyone.

  6. after watching this, it has become very lucid to me that nothing has changed. the poor is still treated as if they are garbage meant to be thrown out onto the street while the wealthy or privileged are taught new skills or further their education in order to better themselves

  7. This video shows the racial issues and a connect to clss level. It shows how white upper class took up on themselves to think they was better then all types of people. I feel like this land is not for the free or to help others it shows the greed of white americans.

  8. This video displays even without the subject of race shows there is a deeper competition even with classism. And they way the white upper class look down on all people is kinda ironic because the basis America was built on has never achieved. This is not the land of the free and the American Dream is not attainable with all the obstacles white, wealthy families have created for their families to continue having generational wealth.

  9. The photographs served as a basis for future “muckraking” journalism by exposing the slums to New York City’s upper and middle classes. They inspired many reforms of working-class housing, both immediately after publication as well as making a lasting impact in today’s society.

  10. These photos show that nothing has really changed since then. Lower class people are still having troubles with bad living conditions. The wealthy people will always be on a higher pedestal just because they have money,

  11. The situation that these people are being forced into is to pick between the lesser of two evils. In this circumstance, each evil will potentially kill you. The setting is set for death for many of those who fall short or are manipulated from making ends meet. The situations seem to be repeated in a more modern version in today’s society. Just because it isn’t good where your at, doesn’t mean it’s better somewhere else. This pays tribute to those who are successful when they venture out. Although it’s not pretty, you can fight to make it work, but the odds are against you.

  12. These images really solidify the reason why black people in the south at this time didn’t have much of a choice. When wanting to leave, they would be met with eminent poverty and a different angle of struggle in the north.

  13. These pictures show that nothing truly changes over time, it just becomes more modernized. It’s sad that people are put in these type of situations but they made the best of it and developed critical life skills that could help them survive in any type of situation. You cannot hep what you are born into but you can always make the best out of every situation.

  14. It’s really appalling that this is the reality for a lot of people even today. With all the advancements in our modern society and people are still living on top of each other or on the streets. How can countries claim to be so great when we have these clear wage and living disparities? Most people today can be getting a decent pay or have a decent education but when it comes to essential things like finding a home its near impossible.

  15. These pictures show a clear distinction in wealth and its unfortunate that what these pictures showcase is still paramount in our society. Some areas are filled with Range driving, 8 bedroom house, white individuals and the other half is filled with white people who are struggling to get by on a day to day basis. Really shows how sickening the wealth gap is in America.

  16. This really shows how bad living conditions for the poor back then was, but whats sadder is that even now I feel like people still do live in conditions like this despite having a better structure in terms of benefit distribution for the poor.

  17. It’s sad to see what these people had to go through.I can only imagine how many people died from diseases and even abandon their kids because they couldn’t take care of them the way they needed to.

  18. These pictures are devastating, and it shows why there are so many immigrants in America now. People are willing to come here to get away from those predicaments only to end up in the same “predicament” with a “gucci belt”.

    1. I really like how you explained our country because that’s truly all it is. Yes, we have a lot more opportunities than other countries, but just because we came a long way from what we used to be doesn’t mean we’re even halfway to our goal. I can truly say as a whole we are not happy. We are constantly put down time and time again. Figuratively and literally

  19. You can think of blacks traveling to the north to end up in an predicament like this and its just a never ending poverty for anybody other than whites (excluding italians, germans, russians).

  20. i believed growing up that in the past it was alwasy white vs black. this video shows me that it was realy Americans vs Everyone else. Their since of entitlement and nationalism causes harm to those of all races.

  21. The 2 images show showed in the video showed 2 different perspectives of how people lived. One image people were living good, and in the other image it was very heartbreaking to see how much they were struggling. Even seeing kids in that condition really breaks my heart, and makes you grateful for the things you have, and not to take your living situation for granted. because it could be much worse.

  22. To see people leaving like that really hurts my soul, I was especially heartbroken when I saw the images of the homeless children… how did the nation not have some sort of system in place for them to live well and get an education? These poor children never knew where the next meal was coming from, America has always been so selfish and full of greed.

  23. After seeing the images of how foreigners lived in the late 1800’s brings me to question on how America pushes the image or idea of “the land of the free” while having no concrete structure for a better life for the people of color and foreigners.

  24. This video reminds me a lot of current day wealth distribution topics. It’s really heart-breaking to see one side of a city struggling so grimly while a dfiffernt side differs drastically. The wealthy are living extremely comfortable while those less fortunate have difficulty feeding their families each day or even finding places to lay their heads. They rely on “lodging” in several differnt places around the cities. Their conditions would be considered nothing less of inhumane.

  25. These pictures shows the struggle and pain people went through to find a safe place to live. Not having your own space , or treated like lesser isn’t right for nobody no matter your race. It’s interesting that most of these blocks are still poor and black has flooded these neighborhoods.

  26. After seeing these pictures on how each side lived it is heartbreaking to think about how the children in the poor area are sleeping on the floor or wearing the same clothes everyday where as the wealthier families live in well kept homes with a table and chairs and beds along with many clothes and other furniture. While there are 2 different types of living condition it is pretty amazing to think that some of the children especially in the poor areas have the chance to get a education to help them learn different skills that they can use to get better jobs and try to find a better place for them and their families to live.

  27. Pretty interesting to see how some of these locations are still poor and some like the upper-west side are still home to the wealthy. Also its interesting that they were so many homeless people living in police stations. Also those homeless kids pictures were surprising to a lot of people reading other comments, when I saw that it reminded me of growing up in Pakistan homeless orphans were everywhere you went made me think that just how things were till I came to America.

  28. the pictures were very disturbing and heartbreaking and I’m so sad for the thousand of kids who were homeless and had to fend for themselves. These were very harsh living conditions as well.

    1. It is truly devastating that humans especially young children had to live in conditions like that. The citizens were so hard-working and deserve a clean space to live. It is unfair for children to have to go out and work at a young age just to be able to eat. Hopefully the younger generation can use this as motivation to continue to work hard and move to a safer environment.

    2. It was quite disturbing to see the images of people and children living in poverty in the southern states. This video definitly helps dispell the myth of the good life in the North. I suppose if one wanted a bettr life they would have to go out west and forge a better life.

  29. Someone please help me understand the picture of ‘homeless children’ especially without their parents. I can understand homeless grown up people whom I think we all see all over, but children?

  30. These pictures show us the different living setups everyone had. These pictures also show the harsh conditions that some people had to live in . Sad seeing how the young homeless kids had to live.

  31. These images show 2 different living situations, where people are making the very best living they can possibly have. Most of the time we are always shown the richer side of the era and not much of the poor. Not everyone was able to be born in wealthy families. Where people were embarrassed to be near the poor like if it was a bad thing and the poor will rub on you. In the contrary, the poor had more living skill and would be able to survive anything meanwhile the rich will have no clue what to do.

  32. These pictures show the two types of living one can’t really help what they are born into but they can try to out grow it to move up in life but even the other half can fall to a position of the ones they looked down on
